I am going to tell you a little secret that not many people know about or do, and that has helped relieve back pain in many people up to this day.

How in the world is a nerve stretch going to get rid of a painful back?

Nerves, unlike muscles are all connected. It's like you have one long road of them running through your body with many side roads branching off the main road. Maybe the doctor has told you to do back strength and stretch exercises, but they are not doing much for you.

What you do need, on top of your other exercises, is to stretch your nerves. Nerves are just like muscles in that they have a blood supply too. So how do you do this?

There are 2 ways. The first is easier, especially if you are not the supple type. The more flexible you are, the higher you will be able to raise your leg, but the height that you raise your leg doesn't mean much with regards to this exercise. So here is what you should do:

1. Find a place in your house that is flat and that you have space to stretch your leg out.
2. Stand in front of either a small stool or a step.
3. Put your heel of one leg onto the step and keep your leg as straight as possible.
4. You should be in the position as if you were doing a hamstring stretch.
5. Now gently turn your body and the leg that you are standing on, towards the raised leg.
6. Bend forward from the waist as if you were going to touch your toe.
7. Stop when you feel you cannot stretch your hamstring muscle much further.
8. Now gently pull your foot towards you (if you cannot reach your foot, then use a towel around the back of your foot)
9. Bend your chin towards your chest.
10. You should feel a burning pain moving up behind your knee.
11. Don't hold this position but gently move either your head or your foot up and down.
12. The burn will most likely move up behind your leg and into your back.
13. Do that for 45 seconds on both legs.

Please be very careful not to be in a hurry or to be aggressive in your movements when doing this exercise. Also, don't be concerned if it does feel uncomfortable. The nerves are sensitive and are not used to being stretched. That burning sensation actually means that you have found the right place and are being effective with the stretch.




Many people don't realize that a nerve stretch is totally different from a muscle stretch and that you need to do both. Many of my patients who used to suffer from back pain experienced great relief after learning about this exercise. Try it for yourself before going on heavy medication but take precaution and don't push yourself too much. There is another way of doing this exercise but you will need someone to help you do it, so for now this is the best way, because you can do it on your own and in the comfort of your own home.

If the material continues to leak out, it could also affect your motor nerves which mean that your muscle strength and coordination will be affected. A microdisectomy procedure will remove only the disc material that has already leaked out. A laminectomy procedure will remove part of the bone, lamina, to provide more room for the disc material to be without putting increased pressure on the sensory or motor nerves.

Arthritis in the spine is more common as we age. An X-ray may reveal arthritis in the spine in our facet joints or areas around the vertebral bodies. Typically arthritis type of pain is dull and achy and tends to be there all the time. It has been described like a dull toothache. It may be possible to shave down some of the arthritis, but it is important to understand what movements to avoid and what muscles to strengthen.

Chronic Lower Back Pain - You CAN Get Rid Of It!


Chronic lower back pain can be caused by quite a few different factors. The problem is, the lower back (lumbar region) is the main support for the weight bearing motions we all go through every day and is particularly susceptible to injury.

Your back is a powerful, intricately designed support system for your body that is made up of bone, muscular tissues, tendons, ligaments and discs. They have to all be in balance and work together or injury and chronic lower back pain is the result.

If we try to lift something incorrectly or take part in a strenuous physical activity (like sports) without an adequate stretch and warm-up, we could pull, strain or tear a muscle. Or, an the worst end of the spectrum, could even cause bone fractures.

Chronic Lower Back Pain - The Disc...

These same types of activities could create a bulging, slipped or herniated disc. The discs are made up of cartilage pads that act like shock absorbers between the vertebrae. They cushion the area in between the different segments of the spine.

Daily gravity, wear and tear on the discs makes the fluids seep out of them - making them less effective as shock absorbers as the day wears on. This loss of fluid can cause us to lose as much as 3/4 of an inch in height throughout the day! These Daily Habits Can Affect Your Back Pain


Every action you take in your daily and every day life has an effect on your back. If you notice that any action has a tendency to increase your back pain then you would naturally do it either less often or learn a better way of doing it. If you are fortunate enough not to suffer from back pain than you would want to keep it that way. In either case, you should learn how to sit, walk, lift, play or sleep properly to avoid back pain now or in future.

As for as lifting goes, there are some really easy rules to remember. Always bend your knees and from a squatting position lift the item. Make sure that your back is straight as possible and the item you are lifting is held as close to your body as possible. Lifting is one of the most frequently reported causes of back pain, and still the most ignored. If you are trying to move some thing that is heavy then always push it from behind the object so that both you and the movement of the object are in the same direction. Never pull if from the front.

Wear flat shoes if you can. If you must wear heels then try the heel not to exceed one inch. High heels cause imbalance of the body and cause strain in the back, which leads to back pain. Never sit in the position for extended periods. If your job requires you to sit in front of a computer screen than take regular breaks to stretch. The same rule goes when driving over long or extended periods. Remember, you do not have to do strenuous exercises to stay fit. Light but regular exercise is effective and can keep pain away a well.

Most people do not give much attention to how they sit, stand or even sleep. This can often be a cause of Back Pain. Always sleep on a firm mattress. If you are not in a position to replace the mattress than put a board under the mattress, which will make it firm. Never sleep on your stomach. If there is a reason for that then place a pillow under your hips. Experts recommend sleeping sideways with your knees bent slightly. A pillow under your head provides neck support.

If you have to sit for extended periods of time, get a chair with lower back support. You should at least get a chair that will keep your back straight. If you need to turn towards some one (for example when some one is trying to get your attention) then try to turn the whole body towards the person rather than just turning the head. When driving long distances, you have to sit upright all this time. In addition to taking regular breaks for stretching, put a pillow or a towel behind your back for extra support. This will avoid back strain. Follow these simple rules and you will avoid back pain in the long run.

Upper Back Pain Relief - There are many different causes of upper back pain, and while not as common as pain in the lower back, it can often times be a much more painful, often chronic condition. The good news is...There ARE medications and pain management treatments that can be very effective.

Some of the causes are myofascial pain (irritated muscles), dysfunction of or degenerative joints, and even an injury or herniation to one of the discs in the upper spine, called Thoracic Herniation. You may even have a genetic disease or disposition to having these problems. Other scary sounding problems could include osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis, sciatic nerve impingement, compressed vertebrae and others.

In other words...before you start on any course of self treatment, check with your doctor to be certain your pain relief effort doesn't require surgery.

Causes...

Though more common in lower back pain, pain in the upper back can also result - over time - from poor posture.

If you are sitting at a desk all day, hunched over doing work, this puts a strain on your upper back. The upper back vertebra are not designed to be constantly bent over like this. It is a more rigid part of the spine, designed to support the weight of the person, and protect the internal organs. If it is not held in an upright position, the muscles surrounding the spine itself can become strained.

Upper back pain can be extremely discomforting. Usually, in addition to having upper (cervical) back discomfort, you may also experience shoulder and neck pain, as well as pain in the lower back and spine. To find upper back pain relief, you will want to really dig in and find ALL the causes. It could be a combination of several acting together - not just one.

Luckily, if you happen to have upper back pain, there are a number of ways to alleviate it. Surgery, medication, back strengthening and stretching exercises, massage and even acupuncture to name a few. Prevention...

But, when discussing your health, it prevention should be your first - top - line of defense.

Since it is so important that you prevent the problem in the first place, here are a few things you can do:

1. The first is get enough sleep at night, with a bed that is supportive of the spine. Sleep is important, not just to rest the back muscles, but to repair nerve and muscle damage.

2. If you are someone who does sit in front of a desk for long periods of time, or in front of the television, that's all right, but it is important that you get up at least once every half an hour.

Move around, stand up straight as much as possible, and walk around a little bit. This way your back and spine don't strain by sitting in one position for so long a period of time.

3. There are a number of back stretching and strengthening exercises you can find that can help... try taking a class in Yoga. Building up weakened muscle tissue in the back helps!

4. Changes in diet can also help to prevent upper back pain. Reducing the amount of caffeine in your diet, eating foods that have anti-inflammatory properties.

Sometimes, upper back pain is unavoidable. It may even happen from doing something you aren't even aware of, and all of a sudden you have these pains.

Frequently, when you get sudden pain from nothing more than twisting or turning at just the right angle, this is caused by a herniated or bulging disc. Since there is no pain unless it actually touches a nerve (we are talking millimeters), it is estimated that 60% of all of us have disc problems - but we aren't aware!

We are all going to have a certain amount of upper back pain occasionally, and here are just some of the many ways to get severe back pain relief.

Upper Back Pain Relief...Cures

One way to find upper back pain relief is to soak in a tub of water with Epsom salt. Adding a bag or two to water that is hot enough to just stand it can be a great relief, not just for you upper back, but other areas of the body as well. If you want, you can even add some essential oils for aromatherapy.

Upper back massage is another great way to relieve pain, and you can do this even if you are by yourself. Take a couple of tennis balls, lay them on the floor, and lay down on them.

Gently move your body back and forth, allowing the balls to massage the muscles. Every thirty seconds to a minute, change the positioning of the balls. If you find an area that is particularly painful, you don't have to stay there, move the balls in another location.

Lower Back Pain


The lower back is the region connecting the upper and lower body, which bears all our weight and because of this reason, it is prone to injuries while lifting, reaching or twisting, if these activities are done carelessly. On the brighter side, lower back pain needs just some basic care, which the individual can see to and relieve the pain in a matter of weeks, in most circumstances. For more chronic cases, where pain is severe and extends to beyond a few weeks, it is advisable to consult a doctor.

Causes of lower back pain

Common cause for lower back pain is over use of the muscles and strain caused through improper bending and stretching which does not support the natural balance of the lower back muscles. Sports injuries, heavy yard work or lifting excessively heavy objects can also strain the lower back. The diagnosis requires a full account of medical history, symptoms and the physical activity of the sufferer before the doctor can commit a serious cause for the lower back pain as X-rays, CT scans and MRIs are limited to cases of broken bones, cancer or an injury requiring surgery. Or, if the patient is considering a lawsuit for worker's compensation for lower back pain being caused due to any practice at the workplace.

Treatment of lower back pain and preventing recurrence.

In most cases of lower back pain, the application of ice for 5 to 15 minutes every few hours for some days is helpful. The patient could alternate with heat therapy, like hot water bottle/heating pad or a hot shower for a longer duration (15-20 minutes) for the next few days. Resting position during lower back pain should be sleeping on the side with a pillow between the knees with a couple of day's bed rest and then returning back to normal routine helps muscles to stay strong with walking being the best exercise for the lower back. Core stabilization exercises can be done gently which improve posture, keep your body's equilibrium at its optimum while lowering chances of injury too. Other safeguards include wearing low-heeled shoes, sleeping on a medium-firm mattress, avoiding lifting heavy objects and watching your weight-especially around the waist as this puts stress on the lower back.

Three Unlikely Causes of Back Pain


When people think of what causes back pain, they often believe that all of a sudden, they make a quick movement or pick up a heavy object and their back gives out. While this may happen in some circumstances, it is far more likely that conditions leading up to a sudden traumatic injury have much more to do with the resulting pain than the proximate cause itself. While there are a large number of reasons for back pain, here are three that are not often discussed.

First, people who have a static work posture for long periods of time will create compression forces on their spine and discs. Especially if workers are forced to perform tasks in a posture with a flexed trunk (bending over), there is a greater risk and higher incidence of developing back pain over time. These types of postures can greatly increase the forces on the lower back and the longer they need to be held, the more likely it is that chronic discomfort or injury will be the result.

A second cause of lower back pain that is not often discussed is simply sitting down while working for long periods of time. Long-term sitting postures at the workplace have a tendency to lead to chronic back discomfort. People who sit down hunched over a computer for 8-10 hours every day are asking their lower backs to perform functions for which it was not designed. Just getting up and extending the back with a stretch periodically throughout the day can help prevent long-term pain.

Finally, a very little-discussed cause of back pain is vibration, especially if it is occurring when in a seated position. Sitting in a car or on the bus or train for several hours a day while commuting to work can cause stress on the spine and connective tissues. These vibrational forces are unpredictable and challenge the body's ability to stabilize the spine. Over time, sitting while vibration is going on can lead to chronic back pain, even though the cause and effect may never be linked.

Everyone who works and commutes to work for significant periods of time should take into account these three uncommonly-discussed workplace-related causes of lower back pain and injury. Variety in back position and a periodic adjustment of posture can help prevent some of the soreness these postures and conditions cause, but it is also important that people simply limit the amount of exposure they have to the pain-inducing situations.

Back Pain Help - Don't Let It Become Chronic

Spinal decompression is done with a traction table that gently and repeatedly pulls the vertebrae away from the swollen disc. This allows a flow of nutrient-carrying blood and fluids to enter the area and promote healing. Discs that are injured can become dehydrated, so the traction is necessary to remedy this condition.

Regular icing in between treatments is recommended. Always use a fabric covered or towel- wrapped ice pack, use for about fifteen minutes only. Repeat as often as every hour if you can. Never fall asleep on an ice pack. You lose the effect of the treatment by letting it heat up, and after all, you would be sleeping on a bump.

How to Improve Posture and Stand Up Straight

The answer's obvious, isn't it? You put your feet on the floor and just, well, stand? If that was true, there would be very little point in my writing an article about it, so needless to say, there is more to it than that.

Before discussing how to stand up straight, let us first consider why it's important that we should, for if we understand the why, the how to is much easier. Standing straight, and so improving your posture, will put your body back into natural alignment, which in turn places less stress on your joints. It will also help to protect your spine, and opens up your chest cavity so that breathing is much easier.

Poor posture, on the other hand, means your body is out of alignment, and creates uneven pressure on your joints. This can lead to chronic conditions which may manifest themselves, for instance, as an inability to sit or stand for long periods of time.

So How Do You Do It?

The first and most important thing is to ensure that you have a good foundation. By this, I mean that your feet are placed firmly on the floor with your toes pointing forward. Next, tighten your stomach muscles, and rock your pelvis gently back and forth. This will help you to find your neutral position, that is your most ergonomic and balanced position. Then, to check your posture:


Stand next to a wall with your head about an inch from it, your shoulder blades and buttocks touching it lightly, and your heels slightly away from it.Spread your weight evenly over both feet. Your spine has a natural s shape, so do not force it flat back against the wall
Centre your ears over your shoulders and your hips over your knees. These points should form a straight line down the side of your body
Keep your knees straight but not locked
When standing correctly, there should be just enough space between your lower back and the wall to fit your wrist

Having found your perfect posture, the key is to retain it. Initially, this may be quite tricky as you will have to keep reminding yourself which muscles to contract or relax. There are many exercises, known as core stability exercises that you can do to strengthen the muscles in your abdomen which are responsible for enhancing posture. Targeting these muscles will help good posture become more natural.

Additionally, consider reviewing your diet and weight. Being over weight may subconsciously make you alter the way you stand, placing too much strain on your lower back, and leading to chronic conditions in the future. Good posture needs to be learnt, and practiced every day. So why not make a start now and stand up for a bighter future!

Causes of Lower Back Pain - For People Who Want to Learn More, But Don't Know Where to Start


CAUSES OF BACK PAIN

Considering the fact that the majority or between 70 and 90 percent of the population will experience some sort of back pain at one time or another, knowledge about back pain relief is certainly welcome, appreciated and a popular topic. One of the best ways to begin learning about back pain relief is by understanding the basics of back pain: what causes it, how it's diagnosed, what treatments are available, how to manage the pain, etc.

Most references to back pain focus on lower back pain in the lumbar spinal region. However, back pain causes in no particular order are:

A. Accidents or injuries leaving muscle pain

B. Osteoarthritis with deteriorating cartilage

C. Osteoporosis with bone loss / fracture

D. Fibromyalgia

E. Major conditions like cancer

Muscle, ligament and tendon problems are generally at the root of the pain problems along with some weakness in the lower back. Other body parts in the region can also be associated like bones and small joints.

When no specific cause is apparent, the term NSLBP (nonspecific low back pain) is used. Any number of reasons for this pain can include degenerative disk disease, psychological issues, systemic disease, facet syndrome (similar to pinched nerves symptoms), herniated disk, spondylolisthesis or the forward displacement of one of the lower lumbar vertebrae over the vertebra below it or on the sacrum. Other factors could be spinal stenosis or constriction or spondyloarthropathy (disease affecting spinal joints).

Let's take a look at each of these and what pain relief solutions are available.

DEGENERATIVE DISK DISEASE - The degeneration of vertebral disks is a natural part of the aging process. What often happens though, is that when the narrowing of the disk space combines with the nociceptors, sensory receptors that respond to pain, in the outer annulus (in the disk space outside the nucleus) or dorsal root ganglion (spinal nerves) that become heightened, the result can be pain, although not always. Sometimes pain can be felt by some people, and other times not. For example a minor accident like missing a step and landing a little harder than usual on your feet might cause back pain. And certain activities can aggravate degenerative disks, like yard work or house cleaning movements. But overall, pain associated with degenerative disk disease generally heals within a few days at most. Preventative measures like strengthening muscle groups to lessen future traumas are usually recommended along with an analgesic or medication that helps relieve pain. Only in some cases are epidurals or injections, blocks or surgery needed.

PSYCHOLOGICAL ISSUES - If acute back pain turns into chronic stages, factors of depression, fear and anxiety could increase discomfort and pain. And the longer the chronic pain persists, the more these factors tend to play a role, an increased role over time. So treatment strategies may need to include learning coping skills and alternative lifestyle enhancements to deal with the psychological factors present.

SYSTEMIC DISEASE - This disease is the cause for up to 10% of back pain and largely among the elderly. Causes could be cancer-related or related to reduced bone mass or simply the aging process. Increasing or decreasing activities as well as switching positions all may have no affect on pain relief. Alternative therapies may be in need.

FACET SYNDROME - Similar to pinched nerves symptoms, this is believed to be associated with pain in the back's side joints and the main cause of up to 20 percent of back pain cases, with buttocks and upper leg pain increasing with long-term standing, and when switching sitting / standing / lying positions. An injection of local anesthetic into the facet joint helps determine the diagnosis. However, since the anesthetic relieves the pain at the same time and is used as a short-term solution, an x-ray doesn't help with imaging the pain results. Recommended treatment includes rigorous lumbar activities and body mechanics exercises to learn proper or more beneficial posture and movement techniques.

HERNIATED DISK - Also known as a ruptured or protruding disk, a herniated disk extends beyond its own area into a surrounding region. Compression of the nerve root can cause pain. And pressure on the fibers in surrounding ligaments can cause pain. Although an accident involving lifting could be the cause of a herniated disk, it's not necessarily so. For many, the cause is unknown; pain can occur suddenly or gradually over time. Relief for the pain can come from walking instead of sitting or standing, and surgery is rarely required right away, if at all in the event relief from pain happens within a limited amount of time. During this time (up to several weeks) any of the following might be effective to use, depending upon your healthcare provider: medication, physical therapy or non-frequently, steroid spinal injections.

SPONDYLOLISTHESIS or the forward displacement or slippage of one of the lower lumbar vertebrae (generally the fourth or fifth) over the vertebra below it or on the sacrum. This state of health is diagnosed by x-ray. Pain is believed to occur where the displacement is, at or below the displacement, or from spinal stenosis, discussed next. Depending upon the patient, strengthening exercises or a back support may be all that's required. In others, surgery may be an option.

SPINAL STENOSIS - is the constriction or narrowing of the vertebral canal. Mainly due to aging, as the gradual lessening of disk space and changes in ligaments advance upon the nerve roots below the lumbar vertebra or L2, pain can result. It's often accompanied by numbness in the legs and is not aided any by walking. Different vertebra and varied physical activities can affect the pain's location, intensity, recurring and duration. To help diagnose this condition, healthcare providers can use myelography, or an x-ray of the spinal cord after injection of air or a radiopaque substance into the subarachnoid space, with a post-CAT scan.
